Jesus reveals how much more there is for us to be — indeed all that we will be. The whole point of the cross is that the suffering must end. That the suffering has an end. That the suffering has a purpose which has been fulfilled. “Then he opened their minds to them, to understand the scriptures, and he said, ‘Thus it is written that the Messiah is to suffer.'”
When our own histories end, we will be like Jesus.
