A curse that comes from God is still a curse, but it comes from God. And God can’t *not* do what God does… and God creates… and God sustains the universe with his love. So even his curses can become blessings. This should be a mind bender. Is this a paradox for you yet?
But a curse pronounced by one human being upon another human being is blasphemy. Pure and simple. It defiles a fellow image-bearer of God. And any blessing uttered by a blasphemer is a parody of a blessing. It’s not a real blessing at all, for ‘from the same mouth come blessing and cursing.’ And such a mouth, like a brackish spring, is foul.
We are not the source of our own suffering, anymore than we are the source of our blessing and love.“
Readings from Isaiah 50:4-9; James 3:1-12; Mark 8:27-38. Preached by the Reverend J. W. Dell on September 16, 2018 at Holy Trinity Church Inwood.
