Something is not right in America, yet we are at a loss to fix it. So we turn to moralism: a formula of “do more, try harder, receive blessing.” Like the priest and Levite in Luke 10:31-32, we trust our own carefully managed, well-documented systems. But neither temple nor priest could help the man left for dead, it took an unclean outsider — a Samaritan — to rescue him. Likewise, for our sake, Jesus becomes an unclean outsider who obtains for us the mercy of God. By faith in him, we can be confident that God will again delight in us (Deut. 30:9).
