Churches run the risk of spiritual suicide. On the one hand, you can become too far removed from the culture, and a lot of churches do that. They wall themselves off. It was that kind of walling itself off that Jesus was protesting against his own people. But there’s another kind of danger, and that is condoning evil. Love your neighbor too much, and you risk becoming like him. Leave your neighbor to his own devices, and he may well die in the ditch he’s fallen into, having tripped on the stone that he’s put in his own way.
