Today’s readings are talking about the need for wisdom from God. In the case of Solomon, he needs wisdom to govern God’s people well. The Roman Christians need the wisdom from the Holy Spirit to pray as they should. The disciples need wisdom to properly understand the Scriptures. Together the readings are saying that God supplies what is missing from human intellect, human prayer, and human understanding.
These teachings gave the original readers confidence: confidence in themselves as God’s chosen people, confidence at prayer, and confidence in preaching and teaching the Scriptures. In our own day, as members of God’s family, we can be confident that all things will work together for our good.
Jesus loved God for us when we could not. Nothing in creation can ever separate us from God’s love again. Knowing this means we can seek the “treasure” in every circumstance we face, both good and bad, confident that we will find it.
