If there is one thing that I have come to understand as I move solidly into middle age, it is that while my life may not be in crisis, it is certainly hard, if not impossible, for a person to take a measure of his or her true position.
Our lives are often filled with just so much gibberish, so much confusion, so many apparently missed opportunities, blind alleys, roads-not-taken; and, unfortunately, unlike tolerance calculations, there’s no nifty formula for sorting all this out.
It’s difficult to get a sense of where we are if we don’t know where we are supposed to be…
