Well, friends, welcome to Lent.
Lent is a season I can’t say I ever look forward to, though I almost always emerge from it renewed somehow, or more aware. But it’s not something I look forward to, that spiritual practice of giving things up. I’m willing to bet that I’m not alone. A few days ago, for example, my son told me, after I explained why there was no dessert on the table, that he would like to give up “being religious” for Lent. I can sympathize. Especially in light of our Gospel reading for today, which was about Jesus in the desert, being tempted by Satan. In this story, being religious doesn’t look like much fun. It looks difficult and… well, lonely…
